The Russian leader has sworn to take swift countermeasures against what he termed the “increasing military buildup across Europe”, while brushing off Western apprehensions that Russia plans to strike Nato as “nonsense”.
The President’s Address in Sochi
During a wide-ranging speech in Sochi on the recent Thursday, Putin stated: “We are carefully watching the escalating militarisation of Europe … We simply cannot ignore what is happening. We have no right to do so for reasons of our own security.”
“Undoubtedly that Russia’s countermeasures will not be far off,” he continued, during the Valdai discussion club, a regular assembly of diplomats and specialists where Putin often sets out his opinions on world events.
European Summit Amid Increased Strain
These comments came as 45 European leaders convened in the Danish capital for a conference aimed at bolstering support for Ukraine and speeding up military initiatives intended to ensure the region is capable of deterring Moscow’s hostile actions.
The summit followed recent unsettling events in which multiple nations in Europe reported intrusions by Moscow’s drones and jets, raising fears that Russia was challenging Nato’s commitment.
The Russian Leader’s Conciliatory Tone Toward Trump
Despite his warnings to Europe, the Russian president struck a conciliatory note toward Trump, despite negative statements from the American side about him.
In what appeared to be an attempt to court the US leader, he highly commended him, asserting that “if Trump had been in power, the conflict in Ukraine could have been averted” – a argument Trump has often used himself in his addresses.
Russia and the Ukrainian leadership have spent an extended period trying to court Trump over the ongoing hostilities, as the US leader has repeatedly shifted his stance.
Lately, Ukraine appeared to gain the upper hand, with the US leader expressing dissatisfaction in the Russian president for dragging out the war and dismissing the Russian armed forces and financial system as a “paper tiger”.
New Washington Approach
As per sources, the US president recently approved American spy services and the defense department to help Ukraine carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory – a step which would amount to a notable adjustment in US policy under his guidance.
The Ukrainian president has also pushed the US government for Tomahawk cruise missiles, Barracudas and other high-precision equipment capable of striking objectives up to 500 miles away.
Putin’s Response to Remarks
Similar to earlier instances when questioned by Trump, he ignored the remarks, seemingly counting on Trump to reverse his position.
He described the former president as a “easy partner” who knows “how to listen” and said Moscow was seeking a “complete renewal” of relations with the US, praising the previous US government for its “straightforwardness and honesty”.
Reacting to the “paper tiger” comment, Putin hinted the remark might have been ironic, saying: “If we are comfortable being at war with the whole Nato bloc, but we’re a paper tiger, then what is Nato?”
Middle East Situation
The Russian leader also applauded the US initiative to resolve the Gaza conflict, noting that former UK prime minister Tony Blair – likely to have a major part in the effort – could “help achieve progress”.
Putin then went off topic to reminisce about how he once spent the night at the former PM’s residence and the two had a hot drink the next morning “in their pyjamas”.
Stronger Language on Europe
The tone was clearly stronger when it came to the European continent, with most of Putin’s ire directed at the continent, accusing “leaders in Europe” for blocking negotiations in Ukraine and “fueling alarmism” in the region.
He stated: “According to them, conflict with Russia is imminent. This absurd idea is repeated constantly … Do they actually think Moscow will assault Nato? If they do, it shows sheer incompetence, since the notion is unbelievable, or else they are being deliberately misleading.”
Tanker Incident
The president also criticized France’s arrest this week of the sailors on a Russian-affiliated vessel which was accused of serving as a base for unmanned aircraft that forced Danish airports to close last week.
He asserted: “The vessel was taken illegally in international waters. This amounts to piracy.”
War in Ukraine
Speaking about the ongoing fighting, there was no evidence that the Russian leader was seeking a negotiated settlement or reducing his ultimate objective of achieving Ukraine’s defeat.
Although Moscow has made limited advances, he insisted that his troops were “confidently advancing” along the entire front.
Putin also claimed that the Ukrainian side was suffering much higher casualties than Moscow – even though international analysts put Moscow’s losses at close to a million, more than Ukraine’s.
“Considering the Ukrainian casualties, Kyiv should carefully consider starting talks,” the president said.
Zelenskyy’s Appeal
Attending European leaders in the summit, the Ukrainian president said Moscow was “stepping up its destructive actions” and called on Europe to show the “determination” to act without delay.
Zelenskyy emphasized: “It is evident that collective measures and coordinated work are essential for true safety. No nation can face this danger alone.” He urged the continent to “raise the pressure immediately, to compel Moscow to stop the war and alter its approach”.
